SCART to 3 RCA Composite & S-Video AV Adaptor — IN/OUT Switchable, Stereo Audio
Quick Specs & Highlights
- SCART 21-pin MALE plug on one end; four FEMALE sockets on the other — yellow RCA composite video, red and white RCA stereo audio, and a 4-pin S-Video socket
- The IN/OUT slider is the whole point of this adaptor. It sets whether the RCA and S-Video sockets are inputs feeding signal into the SCART equipment, or outputs taking signal out of it. Most cheap SCART blocks are input-only and cannot do the second job at all
- Plugs into the SCART socket on a television, video recorder, DVD player or recorder, set-top box, satellite receiver or camcorder dock, and turns it into ordinary RCA leads
- Passive adaptor — no power, no chip, nothing to set up. It changes the connector; it does not change the signal
- Video travels either over the yellow composite socket or over the S-Video socket — those are two alternative paths, so use whichever your equipment offers, not both together
- Moulded legends on the body label every socket, so it stays obvious which lead goes where long after you have set it up
Product Overview
This is the small rigid block that turns a SCART socket into ordinary RCA and S-Video connections. One end is a SCART 21-pin plug — the wide flat metal-shrouded connector with two rows of pins — and it pushes into the SCART socket on your equipment. The other end carries four sockets: a yellow RCA for composite video, red and white RCAs for stereo audio, and a round 4-pin S-Video socket. Your existing RCA leads plug straight into it.
SCART was the standard fitting on European televisions, video recorders, DVD players and set-top boxes for years, and a great deal of that equipment has ended up in Australia where almost nothing else uses the connector. That is the gap this part fills. It lets a SCART-only recorder or player feed an Australian television through the yellow, red and white sockets it actually has; and, with the switch the other way, it lets you feed a signal into a SCART television from a device that only offers RCA outputs.
What the IN/OUT switch actually does. A SCART socket carries signals in both directions on different pins, and the slider on the top face selects which set this adaptor connects to. Set to OUT, the RCA and S-Video sockets are outputs, carrying picture and sound out of the SCART equipment — the setting for feeding a television from a recorder, player or receiver. Set to IN, they become inputs, sending picture and sound into the SCART equipment from something that only has RCA outputs. A plain, cheaper SCART block is almost always wired for one direction only, and no amount of re-plugging will make it do the other.
Please read this before you buy: it is an adaptor, not a converter. There is no chip inside, no power lead and nothing to configure — it rearranges connectors and nothing more. It will not turn a SCART signal into HDMI, it will not upscale anything, and it will not make analogue equipment appear on a television that only has HDMI inputs. If your television has no yellow composite or S-Video input, you want a powered SCART-to-HDMI unit instead.
One further limitation, stated plainly. SCART also carries RGB, and several competing listings advertise that word. This adaptor does not break RGB out to separate connections — it gives you composite video, S-Video and stereo audio, which is what the sockets on it are. If you specifically need RGB broken out for a scaler or a retro display, that is a different part and you should buy one sold as such.
