Product Overview

A small right-angle adaptor that turns any standard RCA lead through 90 degrees. One arm is an RCA male plug, the other is an RCA female socket, set at right angles to each other. The plug goes into your equipment, your existing lead plugs into the socket, and the cable then runs along the back panel instead of straight out of it.

The problem it solves is clearance. RCA sockets are almost always on the back of an amplifier, receiver, TV, subwoofer or turntable, and a plug pushed straight in can stand 30 mm or more proud of the chassis before the cable even starts to bend. Push that against a wall or into a cabinet and the lead is forced into a tight curve right at its weakest point — the neck of the moulding, where the cable enters the plug. That is where RCA leads fail. Turning the exit through a right angle lets the equipment sit flat against the wall and takes the strain off the cable entirely.

The contacts are gold-plated, on the pin and on the outer sleeve of both ends. Gold does not oxidise, which matters more on an adaptor than on a cable: an adaptor adds a second set of mating surfaces to the signal path, and a tarnished contact is what produces the crackle or the intermittent channel people chase for weeks. The body is moulded plastic with a knurled band around the grip so it can be worked on and off without pliers.

It is completely passive and has no direction — no power, no battery, no switch, nothing to configure or fail. It carries composite video, stereo audio, digital coaxial audio and subwoofer signals equally well, because all of those use the same RCA connector and the adaptor is simply a piece of wire in a plastic shell.

Check the gender before ordering. This is the male-to-female version: a pin on one arm, a hole on the other. It plugs into a socket on your equipment and accepts a plug from your lead. If both of the things you are joining end in a plug you want a female-to-female coupler instead, which is a different part. Two adaptors can look almost identical in a photograph and only one of them will do a given job, so it is worth a moment on the close-up pictures.

This pack contains four adaptors — two red and two black, which is two complete stereo pairs. It is the sensible quantity for anything with more than one stereo input: an amplifier being moved back against a wall, a turntable and a CD player sharing a rack, or a pair of powered monitors plus a subwoofer. RCA is colour-coded by convention — red for the right channel, black or white for the left — so a two-and-two pack keeps both runs readable at the back of the rack instead of leaving you to guess.
