Overview

This is the heavy-duty version of the standard AV lead for PlayStation. It does exactly the same job. It carries picture and stereo sound from a PS1, PS2 or PS3 to the yellow, red and white sockets on a television, but it is built to a noticeably higher standard than the cable most consoles were supplied with.

The difference is the jacket. The lead these consoles originally shipped with, and almost every replacement sold today, is a thin flat ribbon: three fine wires moulded side by side in a strip you can bend flat between two fingers. This one is a round, thickly insulated cable of the sort you would expect on a decent piece of AV equipment. It is heavier in the hand, it does not kink into a permanent crease when it is run around the back of a cabinet, and the moulded plug bodies give you something solid to pull on. On a console that gets moved, unplugged and packed away, that is where these cables usually fail first.

It fits every PlayStation with the wide AV Multi Out socket. The same connector was used across three generations, so one lead covers the PS1 and PS One, the original PS2 and the slimline PS2, and all three PS3 shapes: the fat, the Slim and the Super Slim. If your console has the wide flat socket rather than an HDMI port, this is the lead for it.

What it does not do is high definition, and that is worth being clear about. Composite is the standard-definition format the consoles shipped with, and it is the only picture a PS1 can output. A PS2 or a PS3 can do better over a component YPbPr lead, and we sell one of those separately – so if a sharper picture is what you are after, buy the component cable rather than this one. What this cable is for is a reliable, well-made version of the connection every one of these consoles is guaranteed to support, and which every television with RCA inputs will accept without any setup at all.

Straightforward to use. Push the wide plug into the AV Multi Out socket on the back of the console, put the three coloured plugs into the matching sockets on the television, and select the matching AV or Composite input.
