- Please check before you buy. An HDMI cable is not included — you supply the lead from the converter to the television. The converter works in one direction only: composite AV in, HDMI out. It will not turn an HDMI source back into AV, and it is not for 3D or 4K sources. A USB power adaptor is not included either — any 5 V 1 A USB port will run it.
Product Overview
A composite-to-HDMI converter for equipment that only has the old yellow, white and red RCA outputs. It takes that analogue signal, scales it to 1080p or 720p, and sends picture and sound down a single HDMI cable to a modern television, monitor or projector — which is what makes an older console or video deck usable on a set that no longer has AV inputs.
The three RCA ends are sockets, not plugs. That is the detail worth checking on any converter, because it decides what else you have to buy. The AV lead that came with your Nintendo 64, PlayStation 2, Wii, GameCube, original Xbox or Dreamcast ends in three RCA plugs, and those plug directly into this converter. Nothing adapts, nothing couples, and the lead you already own keeps doing its job.
What you still need is an HDMI cable. The converter has an HDMI socket, not a fixed HDMI tail, so you run whichever length suits the gap between your equipment and the screen. Most people already have a spare lead; if you do not, any standard HDMI cable will do.
Powering it. A micro USB cable is supplied and the converter draws 5 V at 1 A, so a spare USB port on the television, a phone charger or a power bank will all run it. There is no separate plug pack to find a socket for.
Setting the resolution. A small slide switch beside the power port picks 720p or 1080p. If a picture does not appear on the first try, moving that switch to the other position is usually the whole fix — some older screens accept one and not the other.
What it suits. Retro consoles, VHS and VCR decks, DVD players, set-top boxes, camcorders and analogue security cameras — anything that ends in three RCA outputs. Where a source has only two outputs, video and one audio channel, connect the yellow and the white and leave the red unused.
