Controller Charging Cables: PS3 vs PS4 vs Xbox 360 Explained

Almost every controller charging problem comes down to one thing: the plug on the end of the cable is not the plug on your controller. They look similar in a drawer, they are not interchangeable, and the wrong one simply will not seat.

This guide sorts it out in one look, then tells you which lead each console actually takes.

Look at the controller, not the cable

Turn your controller over and look at the charge port. That single check answers the question:

• Mini-USB — a small trapezoid with sloped corners, noticeably chunkier than a phone cable. This is the PlayStation 3.
• Micro-USB — thin and flat with two tiny clipped corners, the old Android phone plug. This is the PS4 DualShock 4 and the Xbox One.
• USB-C — small, oval, and works either way up. This is the PS5 DualSense and Xbox Series controllers. None of the cables below fit these.

Mini and Micro are the two people mix up. If the plug will not go in, you almost certainly have Mini where you need Micro, or the reverse.

PlayStation 3 — Mini-USB

The DualShock 3, Sixaxis and PlayStation Move controllers all charge over USB-A to Mini USB-B (5-pin), and it must be a true data cable, not a charge-only lead — the PS3 pairs and syncs the controller down the same wire.

Two lengths, and length is the only difference between them:

• USB Charging & Data Cable for PS3 — 1.8m — 1.8m, enough to sit back from the console.
• USB Charging & Data Cable for PS3 — 3m — 3m, for a larger room or a wall-mounted TV.

Both work with fat and Slim PS3 consoles, both carry a ferrite core to cut interference, and both double as an ordinary Mini-USB lead for cameras, GPS units and older MP3 players.

PS4 and Xbox One — Micro-USB

The PS4 DualShock 4 and the Xbox One controller share the same fitting, so the USB-A to Micro-USB charging cable covers both. It suits every PS4, PS4 Slim and PS4 Pro, and the original Xbox One, One S, One X and Elite controllers.

At 1.5m it reaches from a console USB port, a wall charger, a PC or a laptop, and it supports charging and playing at the same time.

Xbox 360 — a different thing entirely

The Xbox 360 is the odd one out. A wireless 360 controller runs on AA batteries or a play-and-charge pack, so no cable charges it directly.

A wired 360 controller uses a short breakaway lead: the Xbox 360 wired controller breakaway cable, about 25cm, which connects the controller to the console or to a PC over USB-A. The breakaway design is deliberate — if someone trips over the cable it separates instead of pulling your console off the shelf.

Handhelds charge over USB too

• GBA SP and original DS USB charge cable — the Game Boy Advance SP and the original “phat” Nintendo DS share the same charge port, so one lead covers both. It carries an IC chip to help guard against overcharging.
• Game Boy Micro USB charger cable — the Game Boy Micro (OXY-001) uses its own port and takes a different lead again.

Both charge from any USB source: a laptop, a power bank, a wall adapter or a car charger.
