Wii to HDMI Converter on a Lead – HDMI Out for Nintendo Wii
This adaptor lets you play a Nintendo Wii on a modern television. It takes the video signal from the console’s AV MULTI OUT port and sends picture and sound to your TV over a single HDMI lead, so you no longer need the three yellow, red and white AV sockets that new TVs have stopped including.
Check compatibility
It converts one way only, Wii to TV. It will not feed a Wii from an HDMI source.

About this item
The converter sits on a 50 cm lead rather than plugging straight into the back of the console.
What it does, plainly
It takes the Wii’s component video signal and sends it over HDMI at the resolution the console is set to – 480p, 480i or PAL 576i – and your TV scales the picture to fill the screen. There is no switch to set on the adaptor. For the sharpest picture, set the Wii to EDTV/HDTV (480p); a few TVs will not accept 480i or 576i over HDMI, and 480p is the setting that works on those. It carries every display mode the Wii produces, including PAL 576i, which is what Australian consoles output.
It is worth being straight about what HDMI can and cannot do here: it carries the Wii’s own picture to a modern screen cleanly and without the softness of an old composite lead, but it does not add detail that was never in the game. A Wii title is a standard-definition title whichever cable it travels down.
Check before you buy
- Fits the original Nintendo Wii and the Wii Family Edition.
- The Nintendo Wii Mini is not supported.
- The moulded plug goes into the AV MULTI OUT socket on the back of the console.
- No HDMI cable is included – the adaptor has an HDMI socket and you supply the lead.
Nothing to power, nothing to install
There is no USB lead and no plug pack to find: the adaptor draws what it needs from the console’s own AV port. Plug it in, switch the TV to that HDMI input, and play.
