Rather than sending the entire video signal through a single composite wire, component video splits the picture into three separate colour channels (Y, Pb, Pr), resulting in a dramatically sharper and more colourful image.
The cable also carries stereo audio through dedicated red and white RCA connectors.
Nearly the entire original Xbox game library supports 480p progressive scan through component, which alone is a major improvement over the 480i interlaced output of a standard composite cable. Halo 2, for instance, runs at 480p in 16:9 widescreen. A smaller number of titles go further again, to 720p or 1080i. You can enable supported resolutions in the Xbox dashboard under Display settings.
