A right-angle Toslink adaptor that turns a straight optical connection through 90 degrees. Optical cables leave a socket dead straight and the plug itself is long, so a wall-mounted TV, a soundbar tucked under a shelf or an amp pushed back into a cabinet often will not sit flat with a lead in it. This plugs into the optical port and puts the socket back at a right angle, so the cable runs along the wall instead of into it.

One end is a full-size Toslink (EIAJ) plug that goes into the device. The other is a full-size Toslink socket that takes the optical lead you already own. The plug end turns a full 360 degrees on its collar, so once it is in you can rotate the body and send the cable whichever way suits — down behind a bracket, sideways along a shelf, or up into a cabinet — without putting a twist in the lead itself.

There is a second, quieter reason people fit these. A full-length optical plug plus a thick cable hanging out of a slim panel is a lever, and it works on the socket every time the set is nudged. Taking the run through a short right angle close to the body moves that pull off the port.

The tip is gold plated, which resists corrosion and tarnish and helps the plug keep a firm, repeatable fit in the socket. A clear cap is supplied over the optical face and simply pulls off — worth putting back on when the adaptor is out of use, since that face is what the light passes through. It is otherwise a completely passive part: no power, no switch, no drivers, and the S/PDIF signal passes straight through, carrying stereo PCM and encoded surround such as Dolby Digital and DTS exactly as the source sends it. Every optical join costs a little signal, so we would suggest keeping the total run sensible rather than chaining adaptors.

Three things worth checking before you order. First, this is an adaptor, not a cable — there is no optical lead in the box, and most of the similar-looking listings you will see are right-angle cables. Second, it is full-size Toslink at both ends; the small round 3.5mm mini optical version is a different part and will not fit a square Toslink port. Third, the direction matters: the plug goes into your device and the socket takes your cable. If your device has the socket and your cable already ends in a plug, a straight female-to-female coupler is what you want instead of this.
