Product Overview
A link cable for the original PlayStation. It plugs into the serial I/O port on the back of two PS1 consoles and joins them together, so two players get a full screen each instead of sharing one. On a racing game that means your own mirrors and your own rear view; on a shooter it means your opponent cannot look at your half of the screen.
Please read this before buying, because it is the one thing people get wrong. Link play needs two consoles, two televisions and two copies of the game, plus this cable. It is not a splitter and it does not add split-screen to a single console. If you have one PlayStation, this cable will not do anything on its own.
Around forty PS1 titles support it, including Doom, Final Doom, Command & Conquer: Red Alert, Bushido Blade 1 and 2, Descent, Destruction Derby, Ridge Racer Revolution, Ridge Racer Type 4, Twisted Metal III, Duke Nukem: Total Meltdown, Armored Core and its sequels, Need for Speed, Formula 1, Test Drive 4, Cool Boarders 2, TOCA 2 and San Francisco Rush. Most need a copy of the disc in each console. It is worth checking the back of your game case, which usually states whether link play is supported.
Compatibility: this fits the original grey PlayStation, the SCPH-1000 through SCPH-9000 series, all of which carry the serial I/O port on the rear panel. It does not fit the PSone (SCPH-101), the smaller rounded redesign, because that model has no serial port at all. It is also not a PlayStation 2 accessory - the PS2 uses a completely different network connection.
This is aftermarket stock that has been sitting in our storeroom for over ten years, brand new and unused. It is a replacement for Sony's own SCPH-1040 cable rather than a Sony-branded part. Once these are gone we cannot get more.
