Nintendo Switch & Switch 2 Charging Guide
The Nintendo Switch family charges over USB-C, which sounds simple until you realise that not every USB-C charger delivers the power a Switch actually wants. Here's how to keep every model topped up — whether you're at home, in the car, or on the road.
Wall charging
At home, a USB-C wall charger that supports USB Power Delivery (PD) is the safest bet. PD lets the Switch draw the higher wattage it needs to charge quickly while docked or in handheld mode. A basic phone charger will often charge slowly, or not at all during play.
Charging in the car
For road trips, a USB-C PD car charger plugs into your vehicle's 12V socket and charges the Switch while you play. Look for one with enough wattage for both the original Switch and the Switch 2, and a spare USB-A port is handy for charging a second device at the same time.
Switch Lite, OLED and Switch 2
The Switch Lite, the OLED model and the newer Switch 2 all charge over the same USB-C standard, so one good PD charger and cable will cover every console in the household. The main difference is that the larger models draw more power, so a higher-wattage charger future-proofs you.
